Teacher BookShare Events

The Main Event

It is through Teacher BookShare Events that we bring thousands of FREE books for teachers to choose from for their classrooms and students. Providing a wide range of reading resources for teachers supports them in encouraging their students to choose books of interest and to want to read them.

How do Teacher BookShare Events happen?

  • We connect with a school and set a date.
  • We collect books through book drives and sort the books by reading level and genre.
  • We transport the books and set them out along with refreshments for the teachers and staff.
  • We remain in the school for several hours while teachers visit us during any break(s) in their day.
  • Our experienced volunteers, including current and former teachers, social workers and children’s booksellers, discuss the books with the teachers and  staff while they are selecting books. We encourage them to take as many books as they’d like.
  • We seek out the librarian and/or the reading specialist to talk about literacy needs and desires for the school.
  • Any remaining books at the end of the day are offered to the school librarian.

How many Teacher BookShare Events occur in a year?

In Spring 2009, we started out serving teachers in seven schools in DC. The following year, we added one school but worked harder on perfecting our delivery process, thus increasing our teacher participation to almost 100% .  This year, we will be adding several more schools, working toward our goal of focusing on Wards 7 and 8. Teacher BookShare Events generally occur once or twice a month.
